Trying to convince family to move here, job in Ogden or Provo

Main Post:

I'm considering job opportunities, Ogden,Lehi, and the other near Provo.

My wife is from CA, and has a lot of concerns moving to the SLC Metro area. I am a huge outdoors guy, so I am stoked beyond belief, but we have a 2-year old daughter, and my wife is worried about us fitting in, and raising a family here, especially because we are both agnostic and non-mormon.

I feel like she is going to reddit and other places, and is hyper-focused on all the cons of living in Utah, whereas I am clearly seeing all the positives. But I have to imagine much of what we read on the internet is a very vocal minority. considering when people are happy (and love something), seldom do they talk about it online - and they are just LIVING IT. Whereas if you hate something, or have serious issues with something, you're more likely to voice your frustrations online.

Wanted to hear from locals and transplants alike, what can I tell my wife to ease her concerns. We are both worried about education (which is my main concern, other than economic opportunity), but she seems to think raising a non-mormon daughter here will be very challenging, and she is worried we will be ostracized from various group activities simply because we are not LDS.

It's not as bad as some are making it out to be right? Schools are good? Etc? For what it's worth, we are moving from TX (also a red state). But if the only difference is better weather, and prettier scenery, count me in.

Can’t speak to raising kids here- but as a transplant I will say Mormon culture is real and a heavier invisible force than I anticipated. I still love being here - but the LDS thing isn’t exactly passive.

Single, 24 years old, thinking of moving to northern Utah from Maryland; what do I need to know?

Main Post:

Hello, Utah folks!

Like the title says, I’m a 24 year-old single male currently living in central Maryland. I work for the federal government and just received a lateral job offer to transfer to a position in Utah, almost certainly at Hill Air Force Base. I’m having a really, really tough time making a decision to stay in MD or head off to Utah, so I was wondering if I get could some input from local residents on some of my perceived positives / negatives. For what it’s worth, my main hobby is sub-elite marathon racing, I’d be living on about $48K/year, and I’m not LDS.

Positives for Utah: -I absolutely hate Maryland’s humidity and sticky summers, and Utah’s dry, high-altitude climate is very appealing for my running. -I love outdoor activities and actually came to northern Utah to ski several times as a kid. -The cost of living seems lower than the greater Washington D.C. area where I live now. For reference, I’m paying almost $1800/month for a one-bedroom apartment with garage.

Negatives against Utah: -This is the big one, and obviously not Utah’s fault; I’ve made a ton of wonderful friends here in Maryland, and my entire family (with whom I’m extremely close) lives 1.75 hours away in Central PA. -In that same vein, I’ve heard that it can be very hard to make friends if you’re not LDS. -I’ve also heard horror stories about the dating scene for non-LDS young people, and dating is one thing that I’m definitely interested in doing at this stage in my life. -Others have reported that finding rental apartments can be very difficult and that cost of living is much higher than expected. I’m concerned about taking a salary cut from my current $53K here in the Washington to the ~$48K in Salt Lake, based on the federal locality pay tables.

I’ll have to make a decision either way by the end of this week, and it’s absolutely killing me! 😬

Thank you so much for your help, and have a great weekend.

Born and raised in the Ogden area. Ogden is very close to Hill Air Force Base and a mecca for people who like the outdoor life. Real estate is a little bit tight, but it's tight everywhere from what I hear. It's a very pretty area to live, I love it and would not consider anywhere else. I am LDS and am completely surrounded by people who are not members of the church. My wife and I dread any of them moving away, they are such great neighbors.

On a side note, we don't use Craigslist in Utah. We use KSL classifieds. This can be helpful if you're looking for an apartment or other things once you arrive here.

Best of luck in your decision.

First time Utahn! What are some general do's and don'ts and "common knowledge" about your state?

Main Post:

The Utah sub is really dead, so that's why I posted here.

We have lived in the midwest our whole life and have done very minimal travelling west of the Missouri. Wife got a job teaching in the SLC area, so we're headed out there to live next month.

As someone with very little to no knowledge on the state, what are some bigger picture do's and don'ts of Utah?

Also, what are some "EVERYONE knows that!" things? For example, in the midwest, EVERYONE knows how extreme the weather is. Or EVERYONE knows a farmer or rancher. Or EVERYONE is super proud if our little town or state gets on the national news. EVERYONE's been in a tornado and doesn't run for shelter if they see one. EVERYONE'S the nicest people in the country, etc. etc.

What are some good "uniquely Utah" things to read about, do, or get prepared for before the move?

Any and all info is helpful! (especially if you can get me a job... )

Hoping for a Twilight concert series stop in Ogden, Utah

Main Post:

Heard a rumor tonight that the "????" band lined up for the Ogden Twilight concert series on August 23 could be The Beths!! They're in Boise the day before and Denver the day after.

Saw them in Salt Lake a couple summers ago and they were amazing. I hope I get to see them again.

Crossing my fingers so hard right now!!
